Nintendo Wii U to Hit Stores in 2012, Quality Games are Priority with Nintendo’s New Wii U

Nintendo showed up at this year’s E3 debuting the Wii U. It may have been the top showcase of the conference. The new platform displays a step up in technology of gaming consoles. Also, the Wii U’s part-time standalone controller raised eyebrows, more about this later. But what really keeps game consoles moving off the store shelves, the games, and Nintendo didn’t forget about games.

Nintendo’s new console debut obviously topped most attendees list of must see’s, but that wasn’t all the Nintendo folks brought to E3. I’ve compiled a short list of the Nintendo highlights.

5) Fans are to be excited with the addition of Super Smash Bros on the 3DS and Wii U gaming platform. The popular fighting series haven’t actually gone into production yet, but fans are frothing.

4) Third party games such as Call of Duty and Resident Evil have forced Nintendo to support these games to drive more gaming consumers to the Nintendo product.

At this year’s E3, Nintendo announced titles like Tekken, Batman: Arkham City, Ghost Recon, Assassin’s Creed and more were already in the works. We’re wondering how some of these 2011 titles will be enhanced for Wii U’s 2012 debut, but those are questions for another time. So far, Nintendo seems to be focusing on making sure Wii U is home to all companies and franchises, and that’s a very, very good thing.

3) Chase Mii and Battle Mii are two new mini-games that showcased the powerful potential of the Wii U. These demos demonstrated the Wii U tablet to remarkable effect, giving each player a completely different experience. I’m in no doubt that Nintendo’s innovative controller has much more power than what was on display. Nintendo needs this to sell people on the Wii U.

2) Zelda in HD for Wii U

1) The Wii U game console, Nintendo’s second generation gaming system was praised before the debut at E3 for possibly being the industries most powerful game platform yet. That is yet to be seen, but Nintendo did make a system for all to enjoy, casual and serious gamers, both.

But it’s the controller that actually received the most attention.

To call this new device a controller doesn’t quite capture all the interactive possibilities it offers. It is more like a sidekick to the new console (and television) that doubles as an extra controller in some games, and works as a standalone entertainment device in other scenarios. Think of it as a hybrid controller and tablet with a 6.2 touchscreen.

The new controller for Wii U raises the bar for other game manufactures and is a technological step up for Nintendo and the industry, yet it’s difficult to predict how it will be received and just how it all works until it can be used to it’s full potential outside the “interactive demonstration” that was displayed at E3.

No word yet on how much the Wii U and controller will retail or when it will be available in-stores in 2012.
